Don't be hard on yourself, you are not alone!
The second Friday in January is known as "Quitter's Day" which is the day when most people are likely to throw in the towel on their goals
from craving instant gratification i.e. cake now, versus no and seeing the results later, to losing motivation: "it's so cold and dark!" and choosing the path of least resistance - It's no surprise that lofty goals end up back on the resolution board a year later!
But there is an art to making a resolution that can stand the test of time - and we are here to help you! And all it takes are 3 simple steps
(simple does not mean easy, but it means it can be simple to apply, it's the consistency that's the hard part, more on that to come)
Odds are, your goals are pretty lofty - and Hey, That's great! We love to dream big!
but when we set these big goals, we can feel overwhelmed by how to get there that we actually feel overwhelmed and end up with paralysis on where to start
For example, if you want to run a half marathon in 2024, you have to break down the date that you're going to race, you have to set weekly running goals, perhaps hire a coach, and set those bite sized goals leading up to race day - this includes approachable, daily or weekly actions
Once you decide what those actions are, you can schedule them into your day or your week and continue to build upon them - once you keep the promises you make to yourself and complete these bite-sized goals each week, you build momentum and self confidence and you continue on
an object in motion stays in motion!
If you find something stopping you from sticking to your goal, your "Achilles heel" - find a new route, such as rewarding yourself during or after completing the goal.
So for example: if your goal is to run a half marathon, and you find the weather is an obstacle in meeting your running goals, reward yourself with some new warm running gear when you stick with your bite sized goals for the week
This is called 'temptation bundling' or combining something you love with your habit - this could be listening to your favourite podcast while you run, having your favourite snack afterwards, etc.
Also, be aware of the obstacles and prepare yourself for them when they arrive - because life happens and things get in the way but that's not stopping you from meeting your goals!
So for example: if weather is a major obstacle for your running goals, look at the forecast for the upcoming week when you are scheduling your bite-sized goals and plan your runs for the days that it does not call for snow or rain.
If there is a change of weather, have a backup plan - say for example you plan to run on Tuesday but it rains, have a backup plan to move the run to Wednesday versus giving up on it all together.
If you can't fit your habit into your schedule, consider switching a few things around, setting reminders on your phone or have an accountability buddy - do not be afraid to ask people for support!
fail to plan and plan to fail - life is busy! You have to make these goals a priority and schedule them into your calendar like you would anything else. If it was easy, you would have probably achieved these goals already!
If you want to see changes, you have to make some changes! And it will likely take some sacrifice, but You Got This!
A Growth Mindset is ever-changing - It's when we see challenges and setbacks as lessons versus failure. This mindset can serve us when approaching our own goals
So if you are in the last day of January feeling like a failure because you didn't set out to all of the thing you said you would do or you gave up on your goals - use that as a lesson to take inventory on what didn't work and the things you can do to get back up on the horse and try again
- set those bite sized goals
- identify what your Achilles Heel is and make a plan on how to get past it
we are only 30 days into 2024 - we have another 335 days!!! That is more than enough time to crush your health and fitness goals this year!
The best goals challenge us, which means some missteps and goal failures are likely- as mentioned before, if it were easy everyone would be doing it!
A growth mindset means recognizing that missteps are part of the journey and they can help us learn and grow and succeed with greater likelihood in the future by rethinking our path
Even if you make mistakes, as long as you keep moving forward you are still making progress - the only failure is giving up
If you ask anyone that has achieved any big goals in their life - whether health, fitness, personal, finance related - I can guarantee they will tell you that their progress was not linear and they did not stumble along the way, that's the adventure! Embrace the climb
the New Year is only one marker of a new start. Don’t be afraid to choose another date to start working on a new habit - February 1st is an excellent time to get right back onto your goals
One of my goals this year was to post more on our blog - and I didn't get around to it until January 30th! But Hey, I am adopting a growth mindset, setting bite sized goals and knocking down whatever is standing in my way!
Here's my promise to more content this year!
